What's Making Me Happy

Friday, June 29, 2012

Finally finally Friday y'all!  I have been so eager for this weekend to arrive, if only to sleep in late, lay by the pool, and go see sexy dancing men in Magic Mike.  (C'mon ladies, so many attractive shirtless men... it's a girls night to remember.)  When you're not busy daydreaming and drooling over Joe Manganiello, check out a few of these things that are also making me happy! (Aside from washboard abs that is.)

*I want this map t-shirt from Topshop so badly!
*Did I ever mention that my second favorite animal (aside from all things sharks of course,) are elephants?  I think this picture is lovely.

*These pictures from the Holi festival in India are so BEAUTIFUL.

*I'm amazed by the portraits of Kumi Yamashita created with a single strand of thread.

*Tee hee! I love this.

*Oh. My. God. This walrus' reaction to his birthday cake is basically the greatest thing I've ever seen.

*Have y'all ever heard of the comedy girl-band Garfunkel and Oates?  Because I think they may be two of the funniest chicks I've ever heard.  Go to their webpage, I'll wait.......  Back?  Check out this song.
And this one...

*I love this IFB article on the 100 reasons why it's great to be a blogger.

*This Summer Reading Flow Chart is such a great resource for warm weather reads.

* I could not stop laughing when I heard this version of 'Cally Me Maybe' from the hosts of NPR.

*Stripes and Sequins did an amazing post on the Top 10 Resources for DIY and Craft Supplies.

Floating on the lake and a seafood boil...

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

If I had to name one thing that I loved more than anything during the summer, I wouldn't even hesitate to say trips to good old Table Rock Lake with my family.  There's something about stepping onto the dock on a hot summer day, smelling the water and feeling the gentle swaying of the water to immediately put your mind at ease.  Needless to say, one of the first things I wanted to do on my trip home last week was immediately set foot on a boat and get my lake on.  We had the best time bobbing around in the water, playing dice games with our dock neighbors and having a seafood boil feast with all of our lake friends and family.  Here's a few of my favorite lake photos and even a little recipe for those of you looking to have your own seafood smorgasbord.  Enjoy!
Okay y'all now here's for the really good stuff. (Other than my fam of course...ain't they cute?)  Now this whole seafood boil thing is a little tricky.  You get all sorts of good ingredients.... crab, lobster, clams, mussels, sausage, potatoes, onions, corn, crawdads (I believe that you Northerner call these crayfish....Yankees) crab boil seasoning..... and you boil it.  Thats it. Deliciousness in your belly.

For all of you who need a little more step-by-step instruction...

1) Get some big ol' stainless steel boiling pots with baskets and fill with water.  Set to boil.
2) Once the water is boiling, get together all of the peeled onions, potatoes and corn (basically the stuff that needs to cook the longest and toss in with about half a pack of your seafood boil mix.  (We did this all in separate pots because we had food for about 25 people, but you can definitely do everything in one!)   You'll want to cook this all for a bit, or until the potatoes are tender.
 3) While this is boiling, have a nice cold beer or our favorite...a jello shot.  If you're a dog...take a quick nap.  You earned it.
 4)  Get together the rest of your seafood and toss it all in with the remainder of the seafood boil seasoning.
5) Spread newspaper out on a table (do this outside, it's messy!)  and after the seafood is cooked (it normally only takes about 10 min or so at a good boil,) drain those baskets and pour contents out on the table.  DIG IN!

Tattoosday: Guy Le Tattooer

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

I promised y'all I'd make up for missing last week, and I definitely think that these wonderful tattoos from Guy Le Tattooer.  I first came upon the Tolouse-based tattoo artist when I heard about his tattoo arm exhibit at the Gimpel & Muller gallery in Paris in which he created and tattooed molds of his own arm as surreal and macabre sculptures.  His tattoos evoke an old-world scientific and almost magical style of black & white inking that have me completely mesmerized.  I couldn't wait to find more examples and share them with you all...

June Birchbox Review

Monday, June 25, 2012

Hey y'all, here's my birchbox review for June!  Y'all know my love for a good road trip, so I was really excited to open up this month's travel-themed box.  Last month's box was a bit underwhelming for me, so I was doubtful, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one!  Like last month i wanted to try out all of the products for a while before the review, and i'm ready to tell you all about 'em now:
First up is this adorable wire headband from Modcloth. I won't lie y'all this is probably my favorite product from this birchbox, I can't stop wearing it.  (And I love the cute little deer all over it!)
I've been hearing about these self-tanning wipes for a while now, but as someone who doesn't love the look of self tanner, I was a little wary to use it.  Well I can promise you, these ones were pretty great.  I only used them on my legs the first time, (I had a kinda weird tan from being in the lake,) and they didn't turn me orange or anything!  I'll definitely give the second one a try all over this time.
I am in love with this sunblock.  First, it smells awesome, (I love cucumber,) second it glides on your skin without feeling the least bit greasy, and it seemed to hold up well to floating around in the lake all day.  The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was that it takes a while to rub in, but otherwise this stuff is golden.  I'm definitely going to incorporate it into my summer routine.
I've got mixed feelings with this Juicy perfume.  The first time I wore it I wasn't sure if I liked it, almost bordered on grandma-y smelling, but it's been growing on me since.  I'm going to reserve judgement for a while longer...
As I've gotten older my lips have strangely been losing color, so I'm a pretty big fan of lip stains.  This one has got me pretty hooked, it's the perfect light red stain for everyday use!  I'd love to see the other colors.
Last up was this tinted moisturizer from Jouer.  I tend to like tinted moisturizers for summer, but this one seemed a bit too greasy for my skin type.  (Also, it was a bit dark for my skin-tone.)

Hope y'all enjoyed this month's review, what did y'all get in your boxes?

What's Making Me Happy

Friday, June 22, 2012

It's that time of week again guys and gals, a little bit of what's making me happy.  Currently, the two things making me the most happy right now are having my little Monster back home after his man's weekend at Derek's house, and the 12 inch, 3 speed, oscillating fan that I am going to be parked in front of for the next few days.  Boston heat waves SUCK big time, especially when you live in a 4th floor walk up with no A/C.  Yeah.... With that in mind, enjoy a few other of the things making me happy this week, hoping that you're all staying cool!  Happy beginning of Summer everyone!

*Yup, this is what I'm talking about...

* Oh my god I die.  Buzzfeed. You kill me.

*I'm in love with Elsie's Sharpie mug DIY, the little sayings are so sweet and look so easy to do!  I plan on making a few of these immediately.

*UK artist Rob Mullholland has created some really beautiful Predator-esque art installations in the forests of Scotland using acrylic glass.  Aren't the beautiful? (and a little creepy?)  Love them.

* Hillary Buckholtz's nostalgia blog for the 80's and 90's is AMAZING.  (And is it true that they're bringing back Daria???? I die.) BTW, I totally had this shirt...

*Okay, Field Candy has the coolest tents EVER.  I really love this one...

* Lovely.

* This is beautiful

*Okay, you know me and my propensity for tears, but really this is one of the greatest articles Buzzfeed has every put together.  (And yes, I cried like a child.)

* Thirteen year old me is dying inside a little right now...98 Degrees is reuniting.  Oh Drew Lachey...how did I love you.

*As someone who has said on numerous occasions that I should have been born in the 60's, this article from Vanity Fair about the Summer of Love is a great read.

*I couldn't agree more with this response to the recent controversial Atlantic Cover Story re: Women Having it All.

I'm baaaack...

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Hey there lovelies, I'm finally back from a much-needed vacation in good old Missouri.  I had so much fun with my family and friends on the lake, having seafood boils, (pronounced bohls back home...right Nick?)  out on the town, golfing, and just having a plain old great time!  Aside from the regularly scheduled programming, I'll be sharing some photos of my vacation, a seafood boil recipe, and a birchbox review in the upcoming week.  Missed you all!

What's Making Me Happy

Friday, June 15, 2012

Well it's going to be a short little post for y'all today beings as I spent most of the day yesterday in the airport, (4 AM to 9 PM...ugh.)  These are just a few of the things making me happy this week (besides being home, yay!)  Hope y'all enjoy!

*Illustrator Fabian Ciraolo's remixed cultural icons are pretty awesome.

*Model Melissa Stetten's twitter account of a scuzzy B-list actor hitting on her on a flight (and getting caught!) is too funny!  You can read the entire conversation here.

*I LOVE Louis C.K. so much, and this is an amazing collection of some of his best quotes.  (Warning Mema, there's some serious cursing here...sorry!)

*So funny...and so true.

*The Social Department has some of the greatest t-shirts!  (I'm loving the foodie shirts, but especially this Midwest one... it's a must have.!)
*Should I check my email?

Monthly Mixtape: A Guest Post

Thursday, June 14, 2012

I've got a little quasi-guest post for y'all today   as I'm traveling home for Fathers Day from my good friends Kaston & Nick of the band My Politic (quasi because they're boys and don't like writing actual blog posts.)  They've been on tour for their third album, American Will, and were gracious enough to let us in on their road trip mixtape... and I won't lie, it's pretty EPIC.  I am definitely going to be listening to it with the top off the jeep while driving down back roads (as all summer road trip mixes should be listened.)
I know ladies, this is what men from Missouri look like.  Don't all jump on them at once.
Kaston's Road Trip Playlist by Ashley Fears on Grooveshark

On top of this awesome playlist, I wanted to let you all know where these gentlemen would be playing for the next two weeks in case you're able to drop in on their shows, they love meeting new people!  Also their new album is now available through itunes, or give me a shout and I can send you a hard copy.  (Maybe even a little giveaway in the future if y'all are interested?)   Anyhoo, enjoy this little playlist for the time being, and I'll be sure to keep you up to date on all of the Missouri shenanigans this week :)
