Emilie is the genius behind the yummiest little food blog, Scarborough Food Fair, and is currently preparing for a new adventure in Asheville, NC! Oh how excited I am to come visit... Anyways, Emilie is sharing some of her most coveted food-related wnwr and I'm not even gonna lie, I already want them all too! (I see a wisk DIY in our future.) Enjoy!

infused moonshine

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

I've been a whiskey girl for quite some time, likely due in part to the tradition of good old fashioned moonshine making in my family. (Disclaimer: In Missouri it's not illegal to make moonshine for person use in small quantities.) I love the art of making something from scratch the 'old fashioned' way, and have had so much fun experimenting with different recipes and alcohol types and distilling processes throughout the years. (With the exceptions of the coffee flavored brandy that we made.... i'm pretty sure that it might make you grow a beard it's so strong.)

I've been interested in flavoring moonshine for quite some time now, and after reading about Elsie's infused vodka adventures decided it was time to give it a whirl. I decided to start with some of our oak-aged whiskey (the oak barrels give the moonshine it's darker color,) and chose flavors that would compliment that oakey flavor that the aging process provides, going with vanilla bean and blackberries. (I recently had some excellent local blackberry whiskey that really inspired the fruit choice.) I've been "marinating" my moonshine for about 2 weeks now and am ready to strain off the liquid and try it out, I'm so excited to see the results! Hopefully there will be some yummy new cocktails inspired by this moonshine adventure. Yum!

Tattoosday :: Sasha Unisex

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

It's been a while y'all!  I know i've been holding out on y'all with the tattoosday posts over the past couple of months, but I had simply gotten a little burnt out on the whole thing.  I'd felt like I wasn't posting truly inspirational pieces anymore and decided to take a break.  While I don't think I'll necessarily go back to weekly tattooing posts, I will say that I have been slowly but surely finding some really beautiful art, a prime example being this week's artist, Sasha Unisex.  I have been blown away by her unique style, beautiful, bright tattoos that are almost jewel-like in their artistry.  This lady is amazing y'all! Scroll through a few of my favorites below, and do yourself a favor and check out more of Sasha's work on her website, or her Facebook or Twitter pages.

In Springfield there is one absolute indicator of Summer's return to the Ozarks and her name...is Pineapple Whip.  There's nothing greater y'all.  (Pineapple flavored ice that is.) Now that May is here, schools are letting out, days are getting hotter, and I can't stop thinking about trips to the lake, pretty summer dresses, and patios on a warm night. Here are some sweet summer tunes to go along with your sweet summer treats...

Homemade Granola

Monday, May 13, 2013

I've never been a big breakfast person as a rule, and with my dumb little cinnamon allergy, I generally have to avoid store bought granolas and cereal for fear of going into anaphylactic shock. (Really puts a damper on the day.) That being said, in my quest to eat more whole, natural foods, I have stumbled upon deliciousness.  Homemade granola.  Its good with milk. It's good with yogurt. It's good by the handful.  It's just plain good y'all.

Now this recipe can be loosely adapted to include your favorite dried fruits and nuts, (I'm thinking about adding yogurt chips next time,)  but for general nuts and bolts of delicious granola, I think I've got it.  Get ready for a mouth full of yum.

Honey Granola

Makes: About 12 cupsTime: 1 hour total...most of which you can be reading a magazine or staring out the window...whichever floats your boat.
1½ cups whole or sliced almonds
1 cup walnut pieces or halves

1 teaspoon salt
1 cup honey
¾ cup extra-virgin olive oil or peanut oil
½ cup raisins
½ cup sweetened dried cranberries
Milk or yogurt for serving (optional)

One 16- to 18-ounce container rolled oats
1/2 cup dried coconut
1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. Add oats, coconut, almonds, walnuts, & salt to large bowl and stir to combine.
3. Drizzle olive oil and honey over mixture evenly and stir until mixture is evenly coated.
4. Transfer mixture to a rimmed baking sheet into an even layer and bake, stirring every 15 min or so until the mix has begun to crisp and turn brown.  (About 45 minutes.)
5. Take out of oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes.  (Mixture will continue to crisp as it cools.)  Stir in raisins and cranberries. (Note: I have also added in my cranberries and raisins about 3/4 through the baking process before as well, which works, but you have to be super careful to not burn them. Totally a personal preference!)  Eat up y'all!

Every year on Mothers Day, my family takes a little trip to our favorite local nursery to pick out flowers and plants to fill the nooks and crannies around our home. Greenhouses are one of my favorite places to visit and become inspired and this year espcially, I couldn't NOT snap a few photos. I picked out some pretty pieces for my pots around the home and am SO happy with the riots of color. Here are a few of my favorite pics. (Aren't my parents cute? Big Al is so model posey, I love it.)
